I am a Special Education teacher at an elementary school in a suburban district in CT. I work with grades 1, 2, & 3. I am beginning my 14th year of teaching. My specialty is reading but I also teach math and am involved in making accomodations for other subject areas. I teach individuals and small groups of students in a resource room setting as well as doing a lot of inclusion support and co-teaching in classrooms. In addition to Special Education students I work closely with out math and reading specialists and provide intervention at the Tier 2 & 3 levels through out RtI programming.
I have a structured style while still allowing for creative thinking and problem solving. I use a lot of direct teaching and multisensory programs and strategies which help students with differing learning styles, learning disabilities, and ADHD. I incorporate as many visual aids as I can in my teaching and try to make learning fun and exciting every day!
I have been a leader in data teams, the SST process, and in coaching teachers in reading strategies at my school. I am Level 1 certified in Wilson Language Instruction and have also received extensive training in the Orton-Gillingham methodology. The school I teach at recently received NEASC accredidation and was honored with the distinction of Elementary School of the Year in the state of CT.
I received my bachelors in Education from the University of CT in 1999. I followed this up with a Masters in Special Education.
When not teaching I spend time with my twin 4 year old daughters, my husband, and our chocolate lab. I am an avid reader, skier, snowboarder, and love to travel when I can find the time and money!
