I come from a family of teachers. My mother taught 2nd and 3rd grade for over 40 years. Other relatives range from a school nurse to a high school math teacher. Therefore, it seemed inevitable that I would enter education at some point in my life. I began tutoring in reading and math as an undergraduate journalism student. Then, after changing careers and obtaining a teaching license in MN, I was a substitute teacher in grades K-12 for four years. My full-time teaching experience includes three years in 5th grade, one year in 4th grade, and two years in 3rd grade.
My teaching style has been dependent upon the expectations of my administration. Therefore, my training consists mainly of cooperative learning and instruction via the gradual release model. I have lead both reading and writing workshops. I manage the classroom through rewards and positive reinforcement using both CHAMPS and KAGAN activities. Although I have not been able to implement thematic units in my own classroom, I think they are a valuable teaching format.
