I started my career in education at the tender age of 6 as a 'teaching assistant'. Well, it was more of an unpaid internship, and the teacher who I worked under was my mother, but still. I could sharpen the hell out of pencil, and you've never seen such clean chalkboard erasers. Even then, I took pride in my work. My first PAID job was in a Pre-K classroom, after which I moved around to different grade levels until I became a Descubriendo la Lectura (i.e. the Spanish component of Reading Recovery) teacher. When my district did away with the program, I moved into the role of Reading Specialist and Literacy Coach, which I'm still doing today, 17 years after teaching that first Pre-K class. Currently, I'm working in an elementary school in Houston, Texas, where I work to provide support for ELA and SLA teachers on my campus. And while I absolutely love working with my teachers, nothing beats the feeling you get when you see that lightbulb go off in a student's eyes, so I try to squeeze in working with kiddos as much as I can.
I get bored VERY easily, so I have to make lessons that are fun for me, as well as for the kids!
