I have been teaching high school English for 15 years. I started my career with freshman and sophomore students who were struggling to read and write on a high school level. Over the last 10 years, I have taught AP Literature and Composition and English II Honors. Honestly, it feels like two different careers, but I've found that within certain parameters, the learning process is the same.
My goal is to provide students with the information and guidance that will allow them to develop their own insights into literature. The Socratic Method is the culmination of the classroom activities on a particular text. The best moments in class happen when I take a step back and the students take a step forward.
When students compliment one of their peers because they just heard an eye opening comment from him or her. Smiles. Students continuing their discussions after class.
