I have spent twelve years teaching in the public school system. I have taught grades Pre-K, 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 in both self-contained and departmentalized settings. I spent four years as a reading specialist and literacy coach at an elementary campus. I also work as a literacy consultant.
I would consider my teaching style to be one that encompasses a balanced literacy approach that supports a love of reading. I utilize a workshop model in my classroom and use the gradual release of responsibility to lead my students toward independence. The following literacy leaders have been mentors to me and are reflected in my work: Donalyn Miller, Kylene Beers, Douglas Fisher, Richard Allington, Lucy Calkins, Jeff Anderson, Peter Johnston and Georgia Heard.
