TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Before entering the world of education, I worked as a member of management in a corporate environment. The position that affected me the most was in the in-house education department of a major worldwide telecommunications company, which was responsible for creating and running myriad courses for its personnel—administrative, management, and technical. It was surprising to me that many of the talented employees needed remedial instruction in basic communication skills, so when I changed my career path and began to teach literacy to middle school students, I had real-world experience to bolster my belief that no student should be without advanced literacy skills. When people can clearly express themselves both orally and in writing—when people can read for deep meaning—when people can analyze and synthesize, they empower themselves.

MY TEACHING STYLE

As the name of my on-line store suggests, I have high standards for my students. Many educators have the notion that students cannot or will not rise to a high level of expectations, but I feel that setting the bar high delivers the message that I have the content knowledge and methodology to deliver meaningful and interesting lessons, to facilitate learning and understanding, and to encourage those driven to succeed and those unsure of their abilities. I cover subjects in depth, give students plenty of practice and insight, always helping them to make connections, and assess often so that the student has a clear understanding of what he or she has mastered and what he or she needs to strive toward.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I received the Teacher of the Year award for the middle school in my district in 2010.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

BA in Business Administration from Rutgers University; MBA from Fairleigh Dickson University; Post-baccalaureate Certification in English K-12 from Kean University

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

For fourteen years I have split my time between teaching ninety-minute literacy blocks to sixth and eighth graders. In these blocks, I was responsible for all literacy subjects: reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. I have taught honors-level and on-level classes and have had the pleasure of working with both English-language learners and students with individualized education plans. I have served on a multitude of literacy committees, designed curriculum, worked closely with tutors, and analyzed the Common Core Standards and the PARCC assessment.
