This freebie is a great resource for helping your students remember to follow the steps of annotating text. When my students are first getting used to this process, they find it helpful to have their own mini-checklist to use.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am about to begin my 4th year as a special educator and language arts teacher in the Wake County Public School System in Raleigh, North Carolina. I taught at the same high-needs middle school for my first three years and will continue there next year. I have a B.S. in English and Adolescent Education from SUNY Brockport in western NY, and this year I will complete my master's degree in New Literacies and Global Learning at North Carolina State University. Once I complete my degree, I will be a certified K-12 Literacy Specialist. I am also in the process of pursuing my national board certification.

MY TEACHING STYLE

"No significant learning happens without a significant relationship." This quote is the center of my belief about working with students. Many of the adolescents I work with come into my class with the belief that they will not be successful. They are years behind their same-aged peers in reading and writing, and that has taken a toll on their self-esteem. It is my goal throughout the year to build them up from the inside out so they grow not only in their literacy abilities but also that they become proud of themselves and ready to make a positive difference in the world.
