I am passionate about inclusion. I believe that all students can learn in the general education environment with differentiated lessons, accommodations, modifications and support. However, with the ever increasing demands on teachers, this can often be an overwhelming task. My current role, in a highly inclusive district, offers me the opportunity to work with teachers of many different levels and abilities of learners. I support teachers in differentiating curriculum so that all students, of all abilities can access the content at their level. Part of my time is allotted to support 4 year old Kindergarten program for the district. As the coordinator, I facilitate monthly professional development for our teachers on behavioral strategies, literacy, and math so that our earliest learners get a great start on their educational journey. I also collaborate with 6th-12th grade teachers around, basically whatever they need- differentiated, engaging lesson design; data analysis; service delivery for our students with IEP's; tier 2 interventions; and classroom management strategies. However, I'm most excited about the innovative initiative we began in 2013 to improve student writing in all content areas. We are seeing great improvement in our student's writing as a direct result in the strategies our teachers have implemented. All of my experiences have prompted me to start my own consulting business, Literacy-ology, which I hope will provide the education community with strategies to improve literacy outcomes for ALL learners.
