I began my career in 1997, teaching Spanish and 9th-grade English. I have since taught all levels of high school English and literature: grades 9 through 12, college preparatory, as well as advanced or honors classes. I also have experience teaching speech and drama. Currently teaching 10th and 11th grade English, and dual enrollment English Composition I and II.
My biggest role in the classroom is making and modeling connections between subject matter and the "real world." More than anything, I want my students to create their own meaning and to think independently, so I ask them to do a lot on their own in class, with limited guidance, first; once I hear what they think, we discuss traditional themes, interpretations, and methods... and why these things matter even outside of school.
I have been chosen as STAR Teacher (by the highest-scoring senior student on the ACT) 4 times, and in 2013 I was awarded the Excellence in Dual Enrollment Instruction Award by the community college with which my school's dual enrollment program is affiliated. Better than those awards, however, are the cards, letters, and emails I've received (and saved!!) from grateful students - some of which I carry on my phone for those days when I need a reminder of why I continue to teach.
Bachelor of Arts in English (1997), Master of Education in English (1999), minors in history and Spanish
