TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I Have been working in special needs schools for over 12 years. First as a visiting artist: visual art, drama and music. Then as a classroom teacher. Afterwards, I moved to south America and I started working in a school for children with autism. I was teaching a class of “low functioning” autistic boys from 10yo to 16yo, along with providing art lessons and support to other classes within the same school. I now lead the art department within the school and teach pre-k through to pre-vocational classes all with children who are on the spectrum. The move down south has really forced me to become creative as there is no set curriculum to follow for children with additional needs, never mind physical resources! I got boardmaker and just started from there!

MY TEACHING STYLE

The teaching style that I use is focusing on the small things and celebrating big! Teaching ASN (additional support needs), really forces you to celebrate small achievements and breakthroughs. ASN kids will find any flaws in your planning and prep faster than anyone else so you really have to pay attention to detail and have a strong love and commitment for the job.
