I love teaching all content areas but science holds a special place in my heart. There's nothing better than latching on to a student's natural sense of wonder and curiosity and guiding them in discovery of the world around them. I have taught 9th Grade Earth Science for five years. During the summers I teach an accelerated Earth Science course for those students interested in getting ahead in science and freeing up electives in high school. In addition to teaching I have also served on the Utah State Earth Science Core Writing Committee as a teacher expert in rewriting the state Earth Science core. In 2012 I was selected as the outstanding Earth Science teacher of the year for the state of Utah.
I believe in emphasizing student mastery over student grades. I also believe in offering students a variety of ways to prove mastery. I believe that consistency, student engagement, sincerity, a good plan, and the ability to adapt on the fly are the keys to classroom management and effective lessons. I believe that all teachers should switch up their teaching styles from day to day to keep everyone on their toes. I like using PowerPoint in my classroom because I strongly believe that, if used correctly, it can be one of the best visual tools that we have at our disposal. I vowed early on to avoid boring and stale presentations filled with walls of text. One of the greatest compliments my former students pay me is when they come back to visit years later and they tell me "Mr. Talley, I miss your PowerPoints." Download a few of my PowerPoints today and hopefully you'll see what I mean.
