My experience includes 20 years of teaching 7th-12th grade English. I taught in Illinois and Wisconsin public schools and an alternative school. I was also a gifted/talented and enrichment coordinator in a K-12 school for six years. The alternative school included young adults and adults from the ages of 16 to 42 working on their high school diploma. Their backgrounds varied, but their goal was to graduate from high school. My experience enables me to meet the needs of a wide variety of students.
My teaching style includes following the curriculum as required, but with a twist. I tap into students' interests, multiple intelligences, and their humor. The Common Core State Standards provide an opportunity to dig deeper into the English curriculum, but the curriculum needs to appeal to the students. Interests, choices, and humor make everything more appealing.
