TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught students in every grade from 6th -12th at all levels from Standard to AP. I currently teach 8th grade Language Arts Literacy and love it. The 8th grade is a perfect fit for me to teach because I have the benefit of having students with the middle school mentality, who are still impressionable, and I also get to teach them at a higher level in preparation for high school.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I have a student centered approach to teaching. Many of my lessons put the emphasis on the students generating ideas and working collaboratively to learn from each other. When teaching literature, I delve deeper into the text by close reading and focus on the author's use of literary devices and language to advance the plot of the novel and develop character. I also frequently incorporate the discussion and analysis of sociological and historical issues present in the text to increase the students' understanding of the plot. When teaching writing, I break down the piece into smaller, more manageable pieces with a high emphasis on the importance of editing and revising. Whenever possible, I encourage students to peer edit work to help them advance their own writing skills.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a Bachelors degree in Journalism. As an undergrad, I also double minored in Gender Studies and Sociology. It was these two minors which led me to want to pursue a career in which I would make an impact on society and led me to go back for a Post Baccalaureate Certification in Secondary Education, with a specific concentration in teaching English.
