I have been teaching elementary school for 12 years but making music since I was a baby. I have a piano in my classroom and often can be seen carrying my guitar, mandolin, ukulele, accordion, and percussion around campus. It was always my dream in middle school and high school to be in a band. While my rock star aspirations never came to fruition, I have been given an even greater opportunity; making music with my students!
I remember watching television years ago and a commercial for milk came on. The slogan of the commercial was something like this: "Good milk comes from happy cows. Happy cows come from California". I feel the same way about my students! A happy student is an engaged student. An engaged student is an excelling student. By incorporating music into our day to day routines, my students have developed a love for being at school. I believe in trying to make the ordinary into extraordinary and the extraordinary into ordinary. I expect excellence and high quality academic performance as well as exemplary citizenship and accountability. Music is the entry point to meet these goals. No child has ever heard the happy strum of a ukulele chord and frowned. It is scientifically impossible!
