I taught 8th grade Language Arts before I began work as a reading interventionalist. I then became part of the intervention process for extremely reluctant readers across our 6th, 7th and 8th grade environment. Currently I am extending my classroom experience to include pre-successful readers in the 9th and 11th grade environment.
I enjoy project based learning as an opportunity to use small successes as steps to a much larger goal. I make an effort to find the game in any classroom activity we do. I teach with enthusiasm, particularly for informational texts. I also love any lesson that can be applied in a cross curricular setting.
I have been nominated for teacher of the year twice. I have received awards as an e-class (digital) innovator, the Mustang Teaching and Learning Award as well as the Creative Teaching Award.
My undergraduate degree is in Psychology with a minor in English from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. I have Masters work in film and television production. I have earned a Masters of Divinity. I also have Master of Arts in teaching from the University of Rhode Island where I graduated at the top of my class and was the Student Teacher of the year. I am trained in Leveled Literacy Intervention and Orton-Gillingham. I have a specialization in Digital Literacy and in the teaching of English Language Learners.
