I have been teaching since 1998, and I continue to further my learning through trainings such as Kagan Cooperative Learning and Brain-Friendly Teaching, Gifted Education, Balanced Literacy, Six Traits of Writing, Differentiated Instruction, Ethnic Studies Instruction, Advanced Placement Teaching Institutes, and Suicide Intervention .
Organized Chaos--I build community through using group structures and discussion. Students practice how to communicate with each other by using paraphrasing and other gambits to familiarize themselves with the idea that argument and discussion are not intended to end with a winner. I use games, art, music, theater, slam poetry, community service, meditation, and constant interaction to build a community of critical thinkers. I believe that the most important way for a student to want to learn is by knowing their teachers cares about them.
