Schools and NYC/L.A. Scholarships Tracker Excel

This is a document I have developed over the years as a mentor for high school students in New York City and Los Angeles. It has allowed me to support many students at one time and keep track of due dates, requirements, etc. One tab is for schools, one is for scholarships (as most of my students are Latino/a/e from Title I schools hoping to receive financial support for college), and one is for resources I give to my students. I hope this is useful!

Building Blocks of Phonics / Phonological Awareness (ENGLISH-SPANISH VISUAL)

This handout was made for training my staff on bilingual literacy and the basic progression behind the science of reading or phonological awareness (from print awareness to orthographic awareness). It's a simple visual to see how the skills must be built under the umbrella of phonics for a student to start to build reading fluency.

Bilingual Spanish-English 6-Panel Summary Graphic Organizer

This simple scaffold I use in my bilingual special education classroom. It is great for Spanish-dominant students/a dual-language classroom, SIFE students, and students who need more support with summarizing what they're reading. They can write words or draw pictures in the boxes, depending on their literacy level.

Support Network Constellation / Constelación de Red de Apoyo

Created for an ELA class unit on character motivations, this activity helps students reflect on who supports them and their potential influences. Mapping our support networks as a class always helps the students connect to texts and characters' support networks or spheres of influence. This worksheet was created for an ELA class in a dual language program (Spanish-English), so it is primarily in English with key instructions/words in Spanish and many visuals. Counselors at my school liked the ac

Gratitude & Thanksgiving: Introduction for Newcomer/SPANISH-Speaking Students

This is a presentation I use to introduce my Spanish-speaking newcomer students to what Thanksgiving is in the United States. This is not a comprehensive look at Thanksgiving (as that is complex and long), but rather an introduction to the history, how Thanksgiving is celebrated, the appropriation of Native Americans and their culture, and where else harvest festivals are celebrated. As I teach in a middle school bilingual special education classroom, I try to offer language in Spanish and Engl

Primero fueron "fracasos" (First They Were "Failures" in Spanish)

What do 19 people from Albert Einstein to Jay Z to Vera Wang have in common? They were considered a "failure" at some point by someone else. At the beginning of the year as a middle school bilingual special education teacher, I realized how scared my students were of failure. Of making mistakes. So, each day I began to introduce a different famous individual (mostly in the U.S.) who was considered a "failure" or had a learning need like many of my students do (ADHD, dyslexia, etc.) and their sto

Empowering Neurodiverse, Multilingual Readers Lesson Plan Template: P.E. to SOAR

I developed this lesson plan for my CCNY master's thesis on empowering neurodiverse, multilingual readers. The goal is to employ the pillars of the acronym P.E. S.O.A.R. = Potential Energy to SOAR (purple zone, engagement choices, smaller ratios, oracy, assessments, reinforcement) to employ UDL principles and keep all students engaged in the lesson. The plan is built based on research and texts, especially “Biliterate Writing From the Start” and “Biliteracy from the Start” (Butvilofsky, Escami

Book, Head, Heart (BHH) Español Graphic Organizer

Book, Head, Heart (BHH) is a wonderful framework from Disrupting Thinking by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst that leads to richer student summaries. This is the graphic organizer I made for my bilingual special education classroom for BHH. It would also work for other Spanish-dominant students/a dual-language classroom, SIFE students, and students who need more support with summarizing what they're reading. They can write words or draw pictures in the boxes, depending on their literacy level.

Teaching style

Student-centered classrooms focused on sparking curiosities, small groups, and project-based learning. My goal is to be more of a facilitator and coach asking questions and guiding students, but allowing them to be in the driver's seat.
