I worked for almost eight years at a small school in Costa Mesa CA. I helped the center become NAEYC accredited and re-accredited. I have experience with young children ages two through five. However, I spent most of my time teaching pre-k, and totally loving it! I have had an extensive amount of training through NAEYC workshops that focused anywhere from math, literacy, anti-biased curriculum, art, to working with children with special needs. I have a BA in ECE and am in the process of getting my Masters in Education with a specialization in Curriculum Instruction.
I believe that children learn through play. I think it is important to focus on the whole child when planning curriculum. I am a strong believer in Uri Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model Theory, as well as Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory. In my classroom I have a Reggio-Emilia style approach and truly believe that an aesthetically pleasing classroom is also an important factor in how children learn and behave. I choose to use more of an emergent style curriculum and less of a teacher-directed approach.
