I am currently in my SEVENTH (wow, can't believe time has passed so quickly!) year of teaching and my first year in 8th grade math. I have mostly been a self-contained teacher prior to this year, and so I've taught all subject areas in fourth and fifth grade. I also worked on a professional development grant with one of my former math professors. In that project, I was responsible for assisting in the development of conceptually-based teaching materials, including both lesson plans and student hand-outs.
I take a constructivist approach to learning. I firmly believe that students understand at the highest level when they play a role in constructing their learning, especially in a conceptual way. I will never hand my students a process or formula and ask them to spit it back out on a test or a quiz. Rather, they build on what they already know and, with some guidance from me, determine ways to approach problems.
Only the "Best Teacher Ever" posters my students give me. (One of the best parts about teaching, isn't it? :)
