After spending 5 years in the classroom as a high school math teacher, I am now working as a Mathematics Teacher on Special Assignment as an instructional coach within my school district. During my time as a teacher I taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Calculus, as well as Integrated Math 1 and Integrated Math 2. I have logged well over 1,500 hours of professional development in Mathematics and English Language Learning instructional strategies.
The core of my teaching philosophy is three fold. 1.) Be positive in all we do. Students come from all types of backgrounds. We cannot control the environment they come from or where they go to, but we can control the positivity for the time they are in our classes. 2.) Teach mathematics with structured student discourse in mind. Young mathematicians learn best when they are in an environment where they are expected to talk about the mathematics and relate the content to the real world as they know it. 3.) It's all about that growth mindset. Math is a subject of failure. We may not master the skill today, but everyday I encourage students to, "Become a better mathematician and person today than you were yesterday".
