I have taught private lessons for nearly 20 years, private flute lessons for nearly 18 years and have recently moved towards a game based/hands on learning approach for most theory concepts. I taught beginning (6th grade) through 8th grade band for 4 years, worked as a flute coach for a high school marching band, and volunteered as a flute coach for beginners at local schools. I have regularly judged solo and ensemble type festivals for flute students as well as adjudicated for a larger group festival. I have also been hired as a single day clinician for festival prep for middle schools I live near. Currently I teach part time at a private Christian school teaching general music/choir to ages 3 through 4th grade and offer a free pre-school music class out of my home. I also accompany for school music programs, help with music theater, and am a volunteer conductor for my church choir.
I am a recent discoverer of Dr. John Feierabend and believe strongly in his philosophy and approach. I believe that while an educator's job is NOT to be an entertainer, learning CAN be entertaining! I believe most children learn through experience and play and try to incorporate it whenever possible. I've recently revamped how I approach private lessons (with inspiration drawn from Andrea and Trevor Dow) in particular to this regard and I've been enjoying teaching more than ever!
