TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 20+ years of experience in education, including seven years in the classroom teaching middle and high school language arts and social studies. I worked in K-12 professional development at C-SPAN and the Library of Congress, creating and delivering programs and resources for teaching with primary sources.

MY TEACHING STYLE

In two words - fun and rigorous. I try to think outside the box about how to bring content and skills to students, so they get "brain on" and "hands on" - make it their own, ask questions, drive their own and their classmates' learning. I especially love using current events, primary sources, and poetry. I love getting students face to face with experts of all stripes, and to historic sites so they can see the world as their classroom.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Selected for and attended: -NEH workshops on Emily Dickinson and Kansas-Nebraska. -Gilder-Lehrman workshop on the Civil War. Earned Washington Post grant for digital technology.
