Melanie taught public school in Connecticut for 11 years, including middle school band, orchestra, and general music; and high school chamber music, composition, music history, and music theory. She is currently on faculty at the Hartt School (University of Hartford), teaching instrumental conducting and serving as a vocal coach, music director, and accompanist in the Theater Division.

Melanie has presented at national and state music education conventions, with a focus on group composition and teaching empathy through music. She was conductor of the CT Music Educators Association Northern Region Middle School Band 2017, and was named Teacher of the Year at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts in 2012.
Melanie has a master's degree in music education (wind band conducting emphasis), and bachelor's degree in music education and clarinet performance, both from The Hartt School.
As a music director and pianist, Melanie has worked with community and professional theater companies throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts. She is composer of several instrumental and vocal works (available at www.sheetmusicplus.com), as well as two original musicals. Her passion is using music and theater to help students form meaningful connections with others. Melanie is a member of NAfME, the CT Music Educators Association, and Learning & the Brain Society
