I have been teaching for 22 years (4th grade and middle school English/literature). A few years ago, I had the opportunity to serve as a teacher-in-residency at Indiana State University for one school year. There, I taught courses in the teacher education program and supervised students in their field placements. I fell in love with sharing my passion for teaching with aspiring and apprenticing teachers. Currently I teach campus and online teacher education courses at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.
My teaching philosophy begins and ends with the word relationships. When positive relationships with students and their families are built, great learning can grow. I want my middle school students to take action in their own learning, just like I want my teacher education majors to take action in their own professional development. I am guided by the reminder that I only have a short time with my students, and it is my responsibility to teach with passion and purpose. I am always looking for new ways to make my time with my students meaningful and memorable. I want my students' reading, writing, and speaking experiences in my classroom to prepare them for the rigor of being a 21st century learner.
