Hello fellow colleagues! My name is Melanie Laris. With 31 years in the New York City school system, I have had the pleasure of teaching English as a Second Language to Grades Kindergarten through six for my first two years, 13 years as a teacher of Grade 2, 11 years as a Library Sciences Teacher, as well as 4 years teaching grade 3. One of these years, I was on leave for a study sabbatical. In addition, I have experience in one-on-one and group tutoring for students from Grades 3-8 in the area of test preparation for ELA exams and private high school exams.
I believe that good classroom management makes for a successful classroom. While I am very structured in my approach to learning, I believe that "changing things up" is important in keeping children interested in learning. I enjoy using art, music, and dance in my classroom wherever possible. I use project based learning in areas such as social studies and science. I especially enjoy taking the children on trips.
