I finished my thirteenth year of teaching eighth grade science in the Santa Ana Unified School District, located in southern California. I am a 2004 graduate of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids MI. I received my masters in Kinesiology at Long Beach State University in 2009. Teaching in Santa Ana has been a great experience. I love my job and I work to make a positive impact in the life of everyone I work with, students and teachers alike.
Student engagement is an important part of my classroom. I use multiple approaches to monitor all students’ understanding of the learning objectives and content. I incorporate an online learning management system with our 1:1 Chromebook program. It is a great way to communicate to the students and add to the instruction for the class. My students often graph lab results on Google sheets and turn in the assignments online. Science class is a great place for hands-on and inquiry based learning where the students do labs to answer their own questions. I also incorporate a variety of teaching strategies including: TPR, think pair share, labs, thinking maps, manipulatives, response cards, group work, role play and more. As a part of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) I include higher lever article reading and writing. Students start with writing templates and work towards proficany, using academic language and supporting claims with evidence. Engineering practices is also an important part of NGSS. I have used projects including robotic hands, roller coaster building, and electric motors to help my students develop these valuable engineering skills. Teaching science with enthusiasm and sharing Christ love is a joy.

As an all American Track and Field athlete, I am convinced that hard work with consistency will enable students to achieve what they put their minds to. I want to teach science, while also helping my students learn to set and achieve high goals.
