TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am finishing up my 7th year as a middle school English teacher (8th grade) at a large and diverse school in San Jose, California. I have taught: reading intervention, grade level 8th grade English, advanced 8th grade English, and speech and debate. For the past 5 years, I have been the chair of the English-Language Arts department at my school. Over this period of time, most teachers within the department have shown tremendous growth on state standardized tests. I am proud to have played a small role in the success of our teachers and students.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I use a variety of teaching and engagement strategies. The diverse population I serve will only be successful if they are engaged and entertained; and since success is the greatest motivator, I strive to foster success and growth in my classroom. I have focused my attention on differentiated instruction for varying ability levels within my classroom. I also incorporate Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) as often as possible.
