I've been a first and second grade teacher for twenty years. I loved teaching first but I think second is my favorite! I have found that a lot of second grade lessons get bundled together in a K-2 package. It seems like cute lessons are not academically appropriate for second graders. My goal is to write fun, challenging lessons for second grade.
I always have large class sizes (30-34) second graders with varying levels from pre-school to 4th grade so management is a big key. I use the lessons I am sharing during Guided Reading groups as well as during Guided Math groups. I meet with each group daily Monday through Thursday in both Reading and Math. I really like to challenge my students, no matter what level they are at, to try to give them all the tools they will need to succeed. I also LOVE to use humor!
