I have been a vocal music teacher for 20 years in high school, middle school and elementary. I spent 12 years teaching high school/middle school choirs. What a fun trip! But as I got a little older I wanted a tamer life, so I moved to elementary where I have been for 9 years. I have also been very involved in church music - directing adult or children's choirs, starting/training/arranging for worship bands. Directing adult and children's musicals.
I love working with the kids and seeing them develop their music skills and become musicians. I love to see that "light" come on when they learn that they can read music and then create music from the page. I push instruments at every grade level: hand bells, recorders, hand drums, step bells (xylophones), melody bells, conga drums, guitar, harmonicas, are some of the instruments my students play at school. I especially love using hand bells (choir chimes or bell plates) and have used them in 5th thru 12th grades.
Clinician/director for two different regional high school honor choirs in Missouri. Director of my district's 4th grade (1000 kids) choir for the Mayor's Christmas Concert in 2012.
BMEd. in music education (piano), Masters in Teaching with Technology.
I have written 4 children's musicals for church or Christian schools (see my website - maryjosmusic.com)
