After graduating with a degree in Early Childhood Education, I taught 1st grade for 3 years in Katonah and Harrison, NY. I earned 2 Masters' degrees, 1 in teaching Reading and Writing, and the 2nd degree is in School Counseling. I worked in the south Bronx, NY, on and off for many years as both a guidance counselor and reading teacher. During this time I gave birth to 3 boys! I wrote a parenting guide for monitoring child development, Kids on Track Checklists.
I believe in using thematic units to teach a multi-sensory approach. Students should work in groups as much as possible, with clear group roles. The teacher is a model, and monitors independent work. A class management system is in place to motivate students towards good behavior and community building. New Common Core standards are embedded in this style.
