I taught for seven years at a Title-One school about a hour outside of New Orleans, Louisiana. I have taught 4th, 5th and 6th grade English Language Arts. I also spend a year teaching math, science, and social studies to 4th graders. I have taught Read 180 for three years to struggling readers, as an intervention. I taught Common Core for the last two years. I have been instructed in professional development trainings, at the school level, with Balance Literacy and Six-Traits.
In my classroom you will find the following: Student led discussions, Brain Breaks and movement opportunities, group projects, students that lead a portion of the class, positive reinforcement (compliments, candy or notes home), Reader's and Writer's Notebooks used daily.
I was selected as Teacher of the Year at the Parish and school level in 2011-2012. I was also the 4-H leader for four years at my school and I was selected as the 4-H Leader of the Year in 2011-2012. I have led professional development meetings to colleagues for many years on a range of topics; Common Core, tips for struggling readers, brain breaks, behavior issues in the classroom, student engagement, curriculum mapping.
I completed student teaching and graduated from college in my home state of Indiana. I graduated in 2008 from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana with a degree in Elementary Education (1st-6th grade).
I am a wife and mom in addition to being a teacher. I have been married for 8 years and have two toddlers named Ethan and Ava. I have lived in New Orleans, Louisiana for 8 years but look forward to moving back to the Midwest to be closer to family in the near future.
