TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I currently teach all grades of middle school ESL in the Bronx. I also lead a creative writing club and a girls group after school. I earned my master's degree in TESOL K-12 at Teacher's College, Columbia University and my bachelor's degree in Spanish language and literature from Haverford College. Additionally, I have a background in special education, training in Orton-Gillingham, and an advanced certification in literacy.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that encouraging the creation of ideas and allowing students to assemble their own thoughts is a good way to promote creativity within the classroom. I challenge my students to be free-thinkers and am always open to suggestions from them. I rarely lecture. Even when I’m teaching a lesson, I get the students involved by asking questions and getting choral responses. When I’m not teaching, which is most of the class period, I use cooperative learning and have students work together in pairs or fours. I have found that there are a plethora of ways to teach other than simply lecturing. I love to do hands-on activities like experiments and crafts that help to reinforce a concept that I have lectured on. I also like to take my children on field trips, both real and virtual, in order to take a more in-depth look at the subjects that we are covering in a particular unit. Learning can and should be fun!
