Music Educator for 26 years with Metro Nashville Schools. I worked with bands in grades 5-12. Music Educator for 5 years at Sumner Academy, a private school in Gallatin, TN. Orff-Schulwerk Certified Music Educator for 15 years with Williamson County (TN) Schools I retired in 2007 after a total of 46 years. I was a French Horn player in the Nashville Symphony for 16 years. During those years, taught band, orchestra, chorus, Orff instruments and classroom music.
I believe that a child should be as active as possible in whatever they are trying to learn. In music it's vital. If it's rhythm, do movement, if it's pitch, do fun vocal activities, and any other way of getting them to actually do it, rather that hearing someone talk about it. I also believe that everyone is born with the ability to do some form of music, whether it be singing, playing an instrument, dancing or just listening. The key is being exposed to the activties at an early age. The younger, the better.
