I’m currently a Lead Teacher for a Music Service in the UK. It’s a job I absolutely love as it’s so varied – one day I might be leading a Dalcroze CPD workshop and another I’m conducting a string orchestra in a small rural school. Part of my work is with a great team of professionals who are always striving to develop their practice in order to give the children they work with the best musical experience available. I feel that whole class instrumental teaching has a certain set of skills attached to it. For the Wider Opportunities agenda to be successful, the teachers and tutors that deliver it must be empowered to try new techniques and develop more traditional ideas futher. I trained at Leeds College of Music and at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Currently holding a BA Hons in Jazz studies, a PGCE with specialist strings tution, the Certificate of Dalcroze Eurhythmics and a PGDip in Primary Education, I am currently working on my Masters dissertation which will be focussing on the use of iPads in the primary music curriculum.
I belive in teaching the whole musical child - using Dalcroze Eurhythmics to help children embody the music they are learning. This definately adds an element of livliness to my lessons! When working with non-specialist primary teachers, I am keen to empower them and demystefy the world of sound so they feel excited about teaching music to their classes - not intidmidated!
