I have been teaching early childhood special education for almost twenty years. I have done everything from interrelated Kindergarten to full inclusion preschool. I currently teach a self-contained pre-K classroom for children with mixed abilities. My students are mostly non-verbal and I am their first teacher and first experience with school.
My focus is always making children feel safe and developing a love of learning in them. Over the last two years, I've come to realize that teaching explicit vocabulary is key to helping children with limited communication develop a broader understanding of words and how they work. I build my lesson plans, both reading and math, around vocabulary and watch a love of learning new words spread into speech therapy and play and all areas of development. My products are geared towards young learners who have low incidence special needs such as autism or intellectual delays.
