I taught second grade for five years and I am teaching first grade this year! I have had experience teaching kindergarten and first grade summer school for two years. Previously, I student taught in third and fourth grade. I was a substitute teacher in a K-6 school for one month after graduating college before getting my first full time position.
Above all, I believe in using positive reinforcement and laughter to promote a welcoming and warm classroom environment. Students, especially young students, cannot learn if they are not comfortable in their own classroom. I am a firm believer in giving students "turn and talk" opportunities as often as possible. Why call on just one student when you can have everyone sharing with someone?! Though not the best singer in the world, I enjoy music and try to incorporate song and dance into learning experiences to engage students. Luckily my technology skills are better than my singing voice. I find that with today's generation, students NEED to have access to technology in the classroom, as it is both engaging and a life skill. I also like to write short poems or use rhymes to serve as a mnemonic device for teaching skills that students have a hard time remembering.
