I have 13 years teaching experience after leaving a successful career as an accountant in the Real Estate industry. My teaching experience includes 10 years in the classroom, teaching 7th and 8th graders, at all levels of learning. Additionally, I am in my 3rd year as a TAP master teacher, a position that allows me to continue instructing students in 6th through 8th grades while also working with teachers to improve their craft. I design and facilitate professional development for my teachers and am always working to improve our curriculum resources for instruction, intervention and enrichment.
I believe that mathematics needs to be learned conceptually and that students learning in this manner will not need to memorize processes as they will understand the why's behind the processes. Additionally, students need ample time to process and make sense of their learning, putting it in their own words. Writing is a great tool to accomplish this. My teaching style and materials reflect these beliefs, incorporating tools to assist in building and reinforcing conceptual understanding.
Teacher of the Year District Semifinalist
I graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a BBA in Accounting and am one short semester away from completing my Master's in Educational Leadership through Dallas Baptist University. Most of my education, however, comes from on-the-job experience from my students and fellow teachers.
I am a married, mother of two twenty-something kids and two four-legged kids. I enjoy pumping iron, running and cycling, always training for my next physical challenge as I believe limits exist only in our minds. I compete with myself and enjoy pushing myself to continuously improve in all areas of my life.
