TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Head of English and Literature for several secondary schools in Malaysia. Practising attorney for 20 years before that. I specialise in teaching grammar, vocabulary and literature to ESL students. Books and English are my favourite things in all the world. If I could not read for leisure and self enrichment I would die. https://www.facebook.com/Mr.DavidEnglish

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love my kids, I love my subjects, I love teaching. I am passionate, loud and bombastic which the kids love, and which keeps them awake in class. :) For some of my kids English is not their second language, it is their third, fourth, or fifth language. My teaching philosophy is very simple. I don’t care what language English is for them, I teach them formal, written and spoken English to as high a first language standard as I can. Because, in the real world, if they sign a contract in English and later go to court about it, they cannot tell the judge, “Sorry, your honour, English is my fifth language.” Guess what? No one is going to care or feel sorry for them. So, I want to give my kids the tools they need to go anywhere on Earth and not feel ashamed or embarrassed about what they don’t know about English. I want them to know everything about English that any other student may know and be able to go to Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard or what have you. I make all of them learn grammar extensively, and they all appreciate that; so do their parents. Because whether we like it or not, English is the world’s language. It does not just belong to the U.K. or U.S.A. By the same token, when I teach Literature I am not concerned about interpretation skills so much, those will come later. What I want is to ensure that they have read every word in the book. Therefore, my Literature exams are very detailed oriented and fact specific. I make sure they read by asking so many questions about so many aspects of the story that they have no hope of passing unless they have studied very diligently. In this way they start to learn what is important in a story and how to spot those incidences as they read. They also find out what it means to be a scholar. I expect to see their literature books extensively highlighted and annotated. I am old fashioned in that respect, I want my kids to at least aspire to world-class excellence and scholarship. I can only find their limits by pushing them up to and beyond their abilities. I am not interested in coddling them, and thereby misleading them as to what awaits in the real world. The surprising thing that I have discovered is that they actually prefer to be challenged than to be babied. When they begin to pass these tough exams, they develop the idea and pride that they CAN compete with anyone. That is the philosophy you see represented in my Literature exams and any other material I produce. We can only get the best out of children when we demand the best they have. I have put in my store Literature exams that are of my creation. I put the exams all in Word format so that you may alter them according to what abridged version you have used. Also, be aware that I keep the margins very small so that I can reduce the amount of paper that is used for printing. Thanks for reading and best of luck to you in all your teaching endeavours. As we all know, teaching with passion and commitment is a sacred profession. Cheers Mr. David
