TEACHING EXPERIENCE

After teaching 6th grade and 2nd grade general education classes, Jerry went to Luther Seminary and became a Lutheran Pastor (ELCA.) After 20 years in the parish, he decided to return to the classroom, but realized he needed a new skill set, so he got a Masters of Education in Special Education. After two years in Philadelphia, (middle school resource) he took a job in a residential facility specializing in children with behavioral issues. In 2010, after acquiring the Endorsement for Autism, he arrived in Las Vegas to teach in middle school, primary and now early intervention autism programs.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Students with disabilities need lots of engaging activities. They also need age appropriate resources to support their learning. I build curriculum around the needs of my students. Applied Behavior Analysis is a foundational educational "technology" that I use with students to teach discrete skills and support learning. Oh, and Fun! Lots of Fun!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

You don't get much recognition in a self contained program, but I am the #1 Jerry Webster on Google (so far I've checked the US, Czech Republic, Germany and Austria.)

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I graduated with a BS Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburgh in Elementary Education. I completed certification as a Reading Specialist at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota before completing a Master of Divinity degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. I completed a Masters of Education in Special Education at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, and a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Autism from Penn State University.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I have always loved to travel, and have acquired fluency in French and German, as well as functional Spanish. It was great to be able to go to Germany with my son when he graduated from Villanova University. My wife Candace and I have been married almost 30 years and have two young adult sons. I can also be found at About.com, where I am the special education expert at http://specialed.about.com.
