I've taught high school English for four years at a small accelerated program where I was the only high school English teacher and was lucky to have the freedom to develop my own curriculum over the course of my time there. I've recently taken a position at our board office as an instructional technology specialist. The new job is great but I'm itching for an outlet to share the lessons and units I want to create but no longer have the students to experiment with.
ENGLISH CLASSES SHOULD BE SKILL-BASED!! Reading, writing, and communicating are the number one concepts we should focus on. Inherited curriculum that dictates that classics are a necessity often fail to meet the needs of struggling students, and rarely provide necessary life skills. Everything I do focuses on enhancing these core skills so that my students can excel anywhere.
