TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I began my teaching career 23 years ago. I taught Kindergarten for seven years until I had my first baby. I was a stay-at-home Mom for 13 years but I was almost constantly volunteering at my children's school. My husband said, "If you could find a way to get paid for all the volunteering you do at school, that would be great." LOL! So, I began substituting for grades k-5. I really loved it. Now I am a Math Interventionist for grades K-3. It is a fabulous job and I truly enjoy teaching Singapore Math!

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I don't know about you...but when I was a little girl, I hated Math. I carried my negative feelings toward Math all through high school. I think it was because, when I was little, students were taught one way to solve a math problem...and if you didn't understand, too bad! The class moved on to the next problem. I felt lost by the 3rd grade. Three years ago, my school district adopted the Singapore Math program. Between you and I, my colleagues and I hated it. But after we made it through the first year, it began to make more sense. I am lucky enough to have been exposed to the entire program across grades K-3, so I can see where the concepts and strategies that the students are learning are going...and where they came from. I feel that Singapore Math is so great because it teaches Math students many different strategies to solve a problem. A strategy that works for one student's brain, might not work for another student's brain. And vice versa. Nothing makes me happier than when a student says, "I love Math! Its my favorite subject!" Yay! I must be doing something right! And guess what? Now I love Math too!!! :)
