TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and have been teaching for the Clark County School District in Nevada for over 20 years. I began the full-day kindergarten pilot program in 2003 and have served as a mentor for other teachers making the transition to teaching full-day. In 2006, I was selected for the Clark County School District’s Southeast Region Distinguished Educator Award. In addition to teaching full-day kindergarten, the project I am most proud of is writing "The Kindergarten Scrapbook" for my school district's professional development department. It is a free resource manual for full-day kindergarten teachers. I have co-taught a Literacy Centers class for teachers, attended multiple SDE National Kindergarten Teacher Conference, and co-wrote "The Kindergarten Chronicles", a school district newsletter for teachers looking for ideas and successful teaching methods. A few years ago, I completed 32 credits above my Master's degree in Teacher Leadership and Differentiated Instruction. I am the proud mother of a 16 year-old daughter, and 19 year-old son, who have always given me the most inspiration for discovering excitement in the process of learning.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe primary teachers are some of the most talented, dynamic and compassionate people. The ability to guide students toward achieving academic success, while providing a healthy and positive learning experience for young children requires a unique sense of understanding and dedication. Teaching primary children is the perfect opportunity to “give it all you’ve got†and prepare experiences for children to expand their love of learning, their knowledge, their ability to get along with others, and their interest in reaching out to the world. Although the primary grades mark an important time to build the foundations of learning, I believe it is important to remember that children still need to be children. Young children are already eager to learn and they possess an innate curiosity. As a primary teacher, it is my quest to provide children with what they need to grow physically, emotionally, and intellectually. I am beyond thrilled to do it.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended elementary and high school in both Albuquerque and Roswell, New Mexico. I completed my BS in Education at the University of New Mexico in 1995. I continued my education at UNLV and received my Mater's degree 2000. I recently earned an additional 32 credits through Touro University in Differentiated Instruction and Teacher Leadership.
