As of 2011, I have taught five years of Social Studies to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English Language Learners in a Title I school in Orlando, Florida.
My approach to teaching is student centered. I pride myself in leading a classroom where students are encouraged to work cooperatively and through exploration. In my short experience, I've learned that students engage in learning the most when they are having fun and learning at their own pace. Therefore I endeavor to establish a learning environment where students work together, explore artifacts and documents, and are not afraid to make mistakes while learning. Within very clearly established classroom procedures and expectations, this approach to learning yields high results because students are making their own discoveries which leads to the most significant and lasting learning. In addition, I employ a variety of research based reading strategies that increase students’ engagement with text and improve reading comprehension.
