I student taught in a sixth grade ELA classroom in MPS for a semester, and then I student taught high school English in MPS as well. My first year as a professional educator was at Bradley Tech High School in MPS. There, I taught ninth grade English, tenth grade English, eleventh grade English and Reading Improvement. Now, as a second year teacher, I am teaching Regular English 10, Advanced English 10 and Creative Writing at Tosa East High School. I also teach an ACT prep course for Upward Bound on Monday nights. I have taught enrichment courses during the summer, and I was a writing tutor at UWM's Writing Center for three years. I was involved in the Writing Project this summer and I also currently advice my school's newspaper (Cardinal News).
I adore the Writing Workshop model for teaching writing. I am fond of the Reading Workshop for self-selected reading units. I have experience with both block scheduling and traditional scheduling, which I feel has made me more open to teaching teaching methods that allow for varied teaching styles. I appreciate mini-lessons and group work. I believe in teaching with dignity and passion. Most of my lessons are intended to build strong foundational knowledge, offer discussion ideas, and encourage inductive thought.
I was honored as Wisconsin's Initial Educator of the Year this past year (2009-2010) by the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English (WCTE). I was asked to present at a round-table discussion at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) in 2008. The school newspaper that I advice has won several awards including "Best in Show" by JEA.
I graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in June of 2009. I have just begun my master's work, and I plan on taking classes during the summer and over the next few semesters. I completed the Writing Project's Invitational Summer Institute last summer (2010) for six graduate credits.
I adore lesson planning, and I take a lot of pride in my work. I get so excited when I plan a lesson that soars in the classroom, and I look for ways to improve the lessons that sink. I am an aspiring poet, and I am currently working my butt off to get my poems published. :-) I LOVE writing of all kinds!
