Use this worksheet to supplement your lessons about living and nonliving things. I had my students (1st grade) draw pictures of a living and a nonliving thing. You could add rigor by having them write about it too!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have a wide range of experience! I began my teaching career by teaching 3rd grade for two years in an urban district. I then moved to another urban district where I taught middle school science (moving between grade 5-8) for 3 years. I noticed HUGE gaps in understanding in my older students. I was deeply troubled by these big misconceptions they still had by the time they reached 8th grade. I spoke to my principal about this many times as well as the elementary teachers. The teachers told me part of the issue was that they didn't know how to properly teach science. When I brought these issues to my principal and asked for more training for them, she suggested that I just teach it instead. So that is how I became the k-5 science teacher at that school. All of that begin said, I am no longer at that school. I moved to a new district where I am teaching middle school science again. Right where I belong :)

MY TEACHING STYLE

I try to do a mix of activities in my classroom to address all learning styles. While I prefer hands on activities I know that students also need to prepared to learn in a specific way when they get to college (especially our older students) so I try to give them practice with that as well.
