TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am in my ninth year of teaching. In those years, I have taught music to children of all ages, from preschool through high school, and even adults. I have taught classroom music and private lessons. I have taught in rural, urban, and suburban areas. I have worked with students from privileged and underprivileged backgrounds, gifted students, "normal" students, and students with special needs. My concentration is elementary classroom music and children's choir. I have earned a Master's degree in music education with an emphasis in choral conducting. My main career goal is to share my passion, music, with others. If my students walk away with a love of music, then I have done my job!

MY TEACHING STYLE

When teaching, my focus is always on the child. I care deeply about the human dignity of each child and his or her right to feel cared for, safe, and comfortable in my classroom. Second, I want my students to be happy because they have found something to enjoy. Third, I hope that they are using authentic musical skills (skills used by actual musicians). I accomplish the first goal by speaking to children with respectful language, knowing that my words and tone set an example of how adults should speak and how I expect to be spoken to. I accomplish my second goal by designing lessons that are fun and encourage full engagement. I meet my third goal by structuring lessons that require and enhance authentic musical skills.
