I have been a Special Education Teacher for 8 years. During that time I created a new LLD program for my district for students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. I love implementing the Orton-Gillingham approach in my classroom. The learning and/or language disabilities class is a self-contained, small group class for students with mild to moderate and severe disabilities. Students are presented with specialized instructional strategies with an emphasis on multisensory, language-based instruction. Students requiring this degree of support benefit from individualized and small-group instruction. Student goals are aligned with the academic performance level of the individual students as written in each Individualized Education Plan. The program provides opportunities for not only academic success but also for social and emotional growth. Students are intensely supported throughout the day but work towards independence and fullest potential. Movement and mindfulness is also implemented into the program to provide students with strong body and mind.
I implement multi-sensory, individualized, and modified instruction for students with mild and severe disabilities. My philosophy for learning is that no two students are the same and thus each student has individual ability and achievement levels as well as individual strengths and needs. It is important to provide students with opportunities and experiences where each student may demonstrate success, reach their fullest academic potential, and be enthusiastic about learning. I believe strongly in parent involvement and teachers working together to ensure student success. I believe in hands-on experiences, learning creatively, and making learning fun. Above all, the goal of my program is to teach the whole child and build independence.
