This is my 9th year as a middle school reading teacher in an outer-ring urban school district. I have experience teaching various grades (6th-7th) and ability levels (special education/gifted learners). A majority of my students read 2 years below grade level. I recently became the head of the reading department at my school and have worked to create pacing guides and assessments for my school district. I am also a mentor to two first year teachers in my building.
I spent my first 7 years of teaching trying to figure out how to get my students to grow their reading comprehension, vocabulary and pass their state reading test. It took me all those years to realize that I needed to start with the basics, establish a routine and help my students learn to "think" like a reader and not just answer questions.
My teacher Value-Added was Above Average for my 2012-2013 school year. (My first year teaching 6th grade.)
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Baldwin-Wallace University in December 2004 and a Masters in Curriculum and Development from Cleveland State University in May 2011.
When I'm not teaching... I enjoy reading, spending time with my family and friends and trying new things.
