Although only in public education for four years, I have been teaching for many more. I began back in 2004, teaching English to Spanish-speaking adults at a non-profit organization here in Austin, Texas. Through this experience, I not only increased my bilingualism, but also discovered my love of teaching. In 2009, I was alternatively certified to teach 4-8 grade bilingual students. Additionally, I have added the EC-12 Spanish language certification and am a Master Reading Teacher. I have worked only in low-SES, Title One campuses in South Austin, Texas.
This is a tough question to answer! I adore using Cooperative Learning in my classroom, and am a huge Kagan advocate. Conversely, I love to lecture and lead discussions! My classroom is a mixture of both! This year I am teaching dual-language for the first time, and with a MIXED CLASS! I am so excited to teach SSL: Spanish as a Second Language!
Teacher of Promise, Austin ISD, Pleasant Hill Elementary - 2010; Teacher of the Year Nominee, Austin ISD, Mollie Dawson Elementary - 2012/13
I was born and raised in Liberty, Missouri, a suberb of Kansas City. It is an upper-middle class town, with minimal diversity. I attended the University of Texas at Austin and majored in Spanish, Latin American Studies and Hispanic Studies. I graduted after having written a thesis, and did so with honors.
I love to teach! I also love translating documents for my bilingual classroom! I hope that I can help many bilingual teachers out there through this website! :)
