I am a special education teacher in New Jersey. I have been in special education for 9 years. My first 5 years were as a paraprofessional where I worked as a one to one in a self-contained room, as well as, in-class support. During that time, I also covered a 2nd grade maternity leave. Then my world changed and I ended up teaching a MD transition age classroom (17-21 years) in a private special education school. After 1 ½ I ended up being hired in a public school were I have been since. I currently teach 6th-8th grade self-contained MD class. We are a functional academic life skills program, where we focus our curriculum on as making it as functional for the student’s lives. One way we do this is by going on weekly Community Based Instruction to help students to generalize skills we are working on in the classroom into the community.
I believe in creating a loving classroom environment where students feel loved and comfortable to make mistakes and learn. I feel it is important to get my students ready to life after graduation and pushing them to be as independent as possible.
